How Were You Baptized?

Making the decision to be baptized is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make. The Bible tells us in the book of John (3:5) that unless we are born of the water, which means baptism, we cannot enter into the kingdom of Heaven.

Peter asks the question in the book of Acts (10:47) can any man forbid water that these should not be baptized? And in Mark (16:16) scripture tells us that whoever believes and is baptized shall be saved. This baptismis pretty important, wouldn’t you agree? There are several scriptures throughout the Bible that inform us just how important baptism is.

There are also many, many scriptures giving us the correct formula in which to baptize. Since baptism is so important, there must be a precise method we should follow. I don’t believe God wants a certain group of people to baptize this way and another group of people to baptize a different way. Why would Christ give us different methods for this, especially if He Himself told Nicodemus that unless you are baptized, you cannot enter into the kingdom?

Ephesians 4:5 says
5) One Lord, one faith, one baptism

I was right, there is only one baptism. Now let’s see what that one baptism is.

If you have spent any time at all in church then you know some baptize “In the name of the father, the son and the holy ghost” and some baptize “In the name of Jesus Christ.” You will even encounter those who baptize “in the name of the father, son, holy ghost AND in the name of Jesus Christ” just to make sure they cover it all.

Let’s see what scripture says by starting off with a popular one. . .

Matthew 28:18-19
18) And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

If you were a new convert you would automatically assume that we have just found our answer. These words are in red because Jesus is telling his disciples what to do so why would anyone baptize any other way? Well, let’s look at that verse a little bit more.

Jesus said to baptize in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the Holy Ghost. He does not say in the names of the father, son and Holy Ghost. So we can see here that He wants THE NAME. Not “a name” and not “the names of,” but THE NAME.

How do we know what the name of the father is? How do we know what the name of the son is? How do we know what the name of the Holy Ghost is?

We can look to several scriptures to get this answer.

I Timothy 3:16
16) And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

If you take a few minutes from your day and look through scripture to see who was justified in the spirit (Romans 1:4-6), who was seen of angels (Matthew 28:2), preached unto the Gentiles (Acts 10:34), believed on in the world (Colossians 1:6) and received up into glory (Luke 24:51) you will find the answer is Jesus.

John 1:1 & 14
1) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God
14) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

If the Word was with God, the Word was God, and the Word was made flesh then we are referring to Jesus Christ. God was 100% God and 100% flesh, all at the same time and His name is Jesus.

Acts 2:38 says
38) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Before Jesus came, John baptized unto repentance and told us to believe on Him which should come.

Acts 19:4
4) Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

one more. . .

Acts 19:3-5
3) And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.
4) Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5) When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

IN JESUS NAME

Once Paul encountered these men, he asked how they were baptized. When they said unto John’s baptism, Paul let them know that they needed to be baptized the correct way and they obeyed. They were then re-baptized in Jesus name. With the help of other scriptures, we now see THE NAME we’ve been looking for is Jesus Christ.

Luke 24:47in jesus name
47)  And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

If you go back to Acts 2:38 it says, “be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins”. Again, all of these go back to what??  THE NAME of Jesus.

The way you are baptized does indeed matter. If you want to see the kingdom, if you want remission of your sins, and if you want to be saved, then you must be baptized in Jesus Name, it’s that important. You will not find anywhere in the Bible where someone was baptized in the name of the father, son, and Holy Ghost. You will not find where someone was baptized in the name of the father, son, Holy Ghost AND in Jesus name.

This is the second part of salvation’s formula.
1) Repentance
2) Baptism
3) Infilling of the Holy Ghost

I want to make it to Heaven and I want everyone to go too. I don’t want to be turned away because I didn’t believe the right way. It’s our responsibility to read the Word of God and that is how we will see what is required to make it. If someone is teaching you wrong, you should be able to tell because you’re putting time into reading the Word of God yourself.

If you’ve been baptized and it wasn’t in Jesus Name, please, get re-baptized. We don’t schedule baptisms at our church. This is not something we put on delay or wait until we have a big crowd. We don’t try to preserve water until ‘X’ amount of people decide to make this commitment. When you feel the need to be baptized, we run the water right then.

In Acts 8 Phillip was teaching the eunuch the word of God and they stopped the chariot right when they came upon water so the eunuch could be baptized. Yes, it’s that important! When you see that you need to be baptized in Jesus name, make up your mind to stop putting it off until this day or that day. Act now as the eunuch did. Because again, Yes, it’s that important. Baptismal tank, pool, lake, pond, river, or bathtub, it does not matter where, but it does matter how.

Why wait?

Bro. Jack Cunningham made the statement,
“JESUS NAME is our power source.
Don’t get it wrong.
Don’t ever forget it.
It’s not our talent, our ability or our words. It’s not our music, our singing or this building. The power behind us is that we have a revelation of the name of JESUS!”
